Congratulations on becoming Prime Minister.
- Your government is currently establishing a network of marine sanctuaries throughout Australia's South West to save our marine life.
- Two areas being considered for sanctuary status are off Kangaroo Island and Margaret River. They are expected to be home to a treasure-trove of undiscovered marine life, and are known to provide habitat for turtles, fur seals, migrating humpbacks and even the endangered blue whale.
- In May, just weeks after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill started, these areas had new oil leases declared on top of them. Oil drilling and spills are the very sort of risk that sanctuaries are supposed to safeguard against
- The Gulf oil spill is now spewing up to 10 million litres of oil a day into the ocean. Where oil drilling occurs, there is always the potential for accidents. Australia's own oil spill happened just last year when there was a catastrophic blow out on the Montara platform off the Kimberley coast.
- Don't let this happen on our beaches, and to our marine life.
- Please establish a world-class network of large marine sanctuaries in Australia's South West, where up to 90% of the marine life is unique, but less than 1% protected.
