- The old shelf edge at around 150m depth is thought to be a major migration pathway.
- There's high cetacean/whales and dolphin biodiversity to the south of Scott and Ashmore Reefs.
- The surrounding area and the area to the north are combination of halimeda beds (which are a globally rare and unique conservation feature), coral reefs and upwelling from the trench creates an area of very high biodiversity that is thought to be an important site for cetaceans.
- The red dot is the three well heads in the Montara Field
- The black around the red dot is the boundary of the lease. The black diagonal lines in a circle are an arbitrary indication of the location – it does not relate directly to the extent of the spill.
- The area around Ashmore reef has the highest diversity of sea snakes in the world. And they have to come up to the surface breath.
- It’s also likely that there'll be a lot of baby turtles in the water up there at this time of year.
- There's also an important geological formation – pinnacles - very close to the drill heads which are likely to be significant habitats.
