Save our marine life

Save Our Marine Life events

Back by Popular Demand: The End of the Line at Luna on SX, Fremantle, WA

Can you imagine a world without fish? Narrated by Ted Danson The End of the Line uses compelling interviews with leading scientists and sweeping underwater cinematography to tell the story of the devastating impacts of overfishing on the world’s oceans, and how we can each help to turn it around.

The ABC’s Margaret and David gave the film 3.5 and 4 stars; adding “it has a tremendous impact… that's the importance of this film, because with knowledge comes power.” The full review is available online.

Opening night Sunday September 19th, 6.30pm, will feature guest speaker Tim Nicol, Coordinator of Save Our Marine Life and The End of the Line (Australia). Tickets from Luna on SX or on the night. The End of the Line sold out 14 advanced screenings in WA and the Northbridge premiere, so bookings recommended!

Part proceeds of all ticket sales go to help protect WA’s unique marine life; currently less than 1% of our southwest waters are protected.

The End Of The Line film screenings

Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year, the powerful new documentary uses interviews with world leading scientists, activists and fishermen, brilliant underwater footage and sweeping cinematography to tell the story of the devastating impacts of over-fishing on our oceans and fishing communities, and the simple solutions to the problem. It has been described as the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ of our oceans.
The attendance at community screenings of the End Of The Line has been overwhelming and generated great momentum around the movement for marine protection.
If you wish to find out more about organising a screening of this film in your local community, please contact Tim Nicol of Save Our Marine Life.

Sea No Evil (Art exhibition)

What: A marine themed Art exhibition in Victoria Park. All work on display is for sale to support both the Artist’s and the campaign to protect our unique South West Marine life. The exhibition is an awareness raising and fundraising event for the Save our Marine Life campaign.

Save Our Marine Life is an unprecedented collaboration of Australian and international conservation organisations working to protect and secure Australia’s unique marine life. Less than 1% of WA’s South West marine life is protected. Our political leaders will be making big decisions about this in the next couple of weeks – we need to make it clear that 1% protection is not enough.

Where: Victoria Park Centre for the Arts at 12 Kent St East Victoria Park. When: Opening night is at 6pm on the 14th of August. The work will be on display on both the 14th and 15th of August.

Local Artist participation

There is still some space for local Artist’s to submit their work in this exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is the ocean or any work with water, the beach and basically a marine theme. Work can be Multimedia but must be flat (like photography, drawing etc).

All expressions of interest are needed by the 26th July. To register contact either Megan Hickey on 0439520604 or email megan_hickey@hotmail.com or contact: Leah Mc Govern on: 0410393318 or email cmc@conservationwa.asn.au

Public meeting in Margaret River held by local Liberal MP

Oil exploration off the South West coast

In the wake of the disastrous Gulf Oil Spill, last month the Federal government proceeded to slap new oil leases on top of potential marine sanctuaries off the coast of Margaret River and Kangaroo Island. Thousands of people have voiced their concern, and ‘sanctuaries not spills’ is fast becoming an election issue. This Thursday the Federal Liberal Party’s Shadow Environment Minister, Greg Hunt, and local MP Nola Marino, will hold a public meeting to see how the community feels about this issue.

If you’re in the area this Thursday (and hey, its Margaret River – who wouldn’t want to be) please go along and have your say. Help make this a national issue that political parties can’t ignore. If you can’t be there, email the local Liberal MP Nola Marino or the Environment Spokesperson Greg Hunt and deliver your meeting message from a distance!

Save Our Marine Life Rally

Offshore from the beaches of Margaret River, the Rudd Government wants to declare new oil leases right on top of possible marine sanctuaries. This area is home to whales, sharks, unique fish and a treasure-trove of undiscovered species.

Join us in Margaret River to show your support for marine sanctuaries, not oil exploration.

Noon, Saturday 8 May 2010
Reuther Park, at the southern end of Margaret River’s main street.
Speakers and free local music.

For transport from Perth metro area email tim.nicol@conservationwa.asn.au with your contact details.

It would also be great if you could RSVP via the Facebook event

Presented by the Conservation Council of WA and the Surfriders Foundation. For more information email Steve Andrews.

Sandcastles for Sanctuaries – a competition for everyone

sandcastlesCan you dig it?

While the judges make their decision, we've got stalls, a band, and a sausage sizzle BBQ happening. :-)

Register today - Call 9420 7255 or email wa@wilderness.org.au

Don't have a team of 5? Don't worry! We'll be making up teams, so if its just you and your mate, that's ok.
