Save our marine life

Who are we?

Save Our Marine Life is an unprecedented collaboration of Australian and international conservation organisations working to protect and secure Australia’s unique marine life. Collectively they have acted on behalf of millions of supporters to protect huge areas of our marine environment around the globe. Marine icons such as the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo Reef; the world’s deepest waters in the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench; and the rich tropical waters of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea all have a brighter future as a result of their work. The collaboration is growing rapidly and currently includes:

Australian Conservation Foundation The Wilderness Society Pew Environment Group
Conservation Council WWF AMCS Nature Conservancy
Conservation Council SA Project AwareWDCS

» Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF)
For over 40 years the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has been a strong voice for the environment, promoting solutions through research, consultation, education and partnerships. ACF works with the community, business and government to protect, restore and sustain Australia’s environment.
» Australian Marine Conservation Society
The Australian Marine Conservation Society is a not-for-profit charity, dedicated to creating marine national parks, making fisheries sustainable and protecting and recovering ocean wildlife. It is an independent scientifically based charity that has been defending Australia's oceans for over 40 years. The Society was formed in 1965 to legally contest and successfully defeat an application to mine coral on the Great Barrier Reef. This victory was followed by Australia's largest sea-based campaign which culminated in the formation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area.
» Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA)
Since 1967 the Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) has been the state’s peak non-government environment organisation. CCWA informs the public and governments on key environmental issues and participates in government and community processes that seek to restore and protect the natural environment.
» The Nature Conservancy (TNC)
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has a simple mission - protect nature and preserve life on earth. TNC is the world's largest conservation organisation with over a million members and programs in over 30 countries across the world. TNC has been working in Australia for 10 years and during that short time has achieved some remarkable results; it has conserved over 3.6 million hectares and invested over $30 million in key project sites across Australia. Priority regions include Northern Australia and the terrestrial and marine areas of Australia's South West.
» Pew Environment Group
The Pew Environment Group is the conservation arm of the Pew Charitable Trusts. The mission of the Pew Environment Group is to strengthen environmental policy through targeted initiatives aimed at producing concrete and measurable conservation gains in both terrestrial and marine systems worldwide. Pew works through partnerships to secure policy reforms and on-ground outcomes that curb global warming, protect ocean life and preserve wilderness. Pew has joined with The Nature Conservancy to establish the Wild Australia program, a joint three-year program that seeks to conserve large natural areas in Australia, both on land and sea.
» The Wilderness Society (TWS)
The Wilderness Society (TWS) is a national, community-based environmental advocacy organisation formed in 1976 whose mission is protecting, promoting and restoring wilderness and natural processes across Australia’s lands and seas for the survival and ongoing evolution of life on Earth.
» WWF-Australia
WWF-Australia is part of the WWF International Network, the world’s largest and most experienced independent conservation organisation. Its mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world’s biological diversity; ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable; and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. With active projects in Australia and the Oceania region, WWF works to conserve Australia’s plants and animals, by ending land clearing, addressing climate change, and preserving and protecting our fresh water, marine and land environments.
» Conservation Council of SA
The Conservation Council of South Australia is a non-government, umbrella organisation representing over 50 member groups whose main purpose is conservation and protection of the environment. CCSA’s mission is ‘to advocate for and work towards a healthy environment’. The role of the Conservation Council is to facilitate representation on conservation and environmental issues to all three levels of government on behalf of our member groups and other concerned members of the community. The Council liaises with industry, government departments, unions, community organisations and all political parties.
» Project AWARE Foundation
Project AWARE Foundation is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to conserving underwater environments through education, advocacy and action. Project AWARE involves divers and supporters in hands-on environmental activities including: Underwater Cleanups, Marine Debris Prevention and Data Collection, Shark Education and Reporting and Coral Reef Conservation and Monitoring.
» Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society
Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) is the world's most active global charity dedicated to the conservation and welfare of all whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans). Established in 1987, our objectives are to reduce and ultimately eliminate the continuing threats to cetaceans and their habitat; and to raise awareness of these unique animals and the need to protect them in their natural environment.

The globally significant south west waters of Australia need your help. Up to nine out of every 10 marine species found in the south west are found nowhere else. It is a unique part of Australia and it is under threat.

The Federal Government is currently considering its fate and we urgently need everyone to do their bit.

With less than 1% of the region protected, Save Our Marine Life is calling for the creation of large marine sanctuaries off the coast of south western Australia. These ‘national parks in the sea’ would protect our marine life, help replenish fish stocks, and ensure the special link we have with our oceans is secure.
