When Newcastle yachtie Ivan Macfadyen returned from a Melbourne to Osaka sailing trip he sat down to pen an article about his experiences called “The ocean is broken”
Little did he know that his story of a “dead” sea, full of plastic rubbish and sucked dry by overfishing, would travel across the world and come to symbolise a huge ecological battle.
Today he’s heading to Sydney to lobby New South Wales MPs to better protect the state’s marine parks.
