Ban oil and gas in the Great Australian Bight

Norwegian oil giant Equinor has abandoned its plans to deep sea drill in the Great Australian Bight.

This is a remarkable outcome and testament to the power of the hundreds of thousands of Australians coming together to defend our precious marine life and coastal communities.

While this is a huge win, the fight is far from over.

Drilling for oil is just too risky in the deep, wild waters of the Great Australian Bight – with the potential to devastate our marine life, local communities, fishing and tourism businesses.

Oil and gas companies Equinor, BP, Chevron and Karoon Gas have dropped their plans to drill in the Great Australian Bight.

This presents a unique opportunity for the Australian Government to protect this incredible marine environment from oil and gas permanently.

Hundreds of thousands of Australians have voiced their opposition to drilling in the Great Australian Bight, and local councils have expressed their concerns.

Oil exploration is just too harmful and too risky in the deep, wild waters of the Great Australian Bight – with the potential to devastate our marine life, local communities and fishing and tourism businesses that employ thousands of people.

The Great Australian Bight’s extraordinary waters are a haven for 36 types of whales and dolphins, including the world’s most important nursery for the endangered southern right whale. They’re also home to Australia’s most important sea lion nursery and some of Australia’s premier fisheries.

I urge you to support a permanent ban on oil and gas in the Great Australian Bight given its importance for fisheries, tourism, internationally significant ecosystems and some of Australia’s most threatened marine life.
