Save our ocean. Save our world. Support marine sanctuaries!

The ocean is our planet life support system and our greatest ally against climate catastrophe…If we save the sea, we save our world… I’m sure that nothing is more important.”  – Sir David Attenborough in his new film “Ocean with David Attenborough”.

Our oceans produce more oxygen than all the world’s forests. They absorb excess heat, store carbon, and regulate our climate—keeping life on Earth in balance.

Right now, our oceans are under threat. Industrial and illegal overfishing, bottom trawling, oil and gas drilling, and pollution are pushing our oceans to the brink. Without urgent action, we risk losing our precious marine life and the benefits our oceans provide.

Marine sanctuaries are the heart of a healthy ocean. They protect vital feeding and breeding areas, boost fish populations and help marine life thrive. They also support tourism, local businesses and fishing into the future.

The Albanese Government has been re-elected. Let’s show them that Australians want bold and immediate action to protect our oceans.

Add your voice. Call for more marine sanctuaries — for Sir David, for the ocean, and for humankind.

Benefits of marine sanctuaries

Highly protected sanctuaries within marine parks protect crucial feeding and breeding areas to help ensure we have fish for the future. They also make coral reefs more resilient to devastating bleaching and cyclones – meaning they are more important than ever before.

And it’s not just Australia’s marine life that benefits …

Sanctuaries are tourism powerhouses, supporting a range of growing industries in regional communities and providing a beacon to international visitors. Long established marine sanctuaries are boosting tourism, fish populations and local businesses right around Australia.

Many of our treasured fishing destinations have been marine parks for years now. Long-standing marine sanctuaries are working hand in hand with world-class recreational fishing in places like Ningaloo Reef, the Solitary Islands, Tasmania’s Maria Island and right along the Queensland coast.

We support marine sanctuaries

We, the undersigned, are concerned about the health of Australia’s oceans and urge you to prioritise their protection by creating marine sanctuaries.

Our oceans produce more oxygen than all the world’s forests. They absorb excess heat, store carbon, and regulate our climate—keeping life on Earth in balance.

But right now, they’re under threat. Industrial, and illegal overfishing, oil and gas drilling, and pollution are pushing them to the brink. Without urgent action, we risk losing our precious marine life and the benefits our oceans provide.

Marine sanctuaries are one of the best tools we have to manage our oceans wisely and ensure we have fish for the future.

By protecting vital feeding and breeding areas, they help boost fish populations and help marine life thrive. They support tourism, local businesses, and fishing Into the future.

Marine sanctuaries are the heart of a healthy ocean.

We urge you to increase marine sanctuaries around Australia and safeguard our oceans and the livelihoods they support.

Sincerely,
