Protect WA’s spectacular South Coast
*CAMPAIGN UPDATE June 16*
The West Australian Government’s public consultation on the draft plans for the South Coast Marine Park has wrapped. Stay tuned for an update on the outcome.
From endangered Australian sea lions and southern right whales to seadragons and blue gropers, the spectacular waters of WA’s south coast are home to a wealth of marine life – much of which is found nowhere else on earth.
Yet, there is currently no sanctuary protection along the entire south coast of Western Australia. Add your name to keep our south coast healthy.
The Western Australian Government’s proposed South Coast Marine Park, from Bremer Bay to the South Australian border, is an incredible opportunity to deliver the world-class protection this unique and special part of WA deserves.
Creating a world-class network of sanctuary zones within the South Coast Marine Park – like at Ningaloo and the Great Barrier Reef – will help keep our marine life healthy and support sustainable fishing and our treasured coastal lifestyle into the future.
Rare and unprotected
Australia’s Great Southern Reef has more unique species than the Great Barrier Reef. But there is currently zero sanctuary protection in coastal waters along this 1000km stretch of WA’s south coast – a huge part of this extraordinary reef!
With temperate reef species at higher risk of extinction than tropical species, the WA government’s creation of a marine park is an excellent first step.
Why sanctuaries matter
Marine parks with large, fully protected sanctuaries safeguard feeding and breeding areas, increase fish populations, and build resilience in the face of climate change.
Creating a network of sanctuaries along WA’s south coast will help keep our marine life healthy and support sustainable fishing and our treasured coastal lifestyle into the future.
This is also a great opportunity to make the whole South Coast Marine Park oil and gas free – to protect the south coast from any future destructive seismic blasting and oil spills.
South Coast Marine Park public submission period
The four-month public consultation period for the South Coast Marine Park closed June 16. Thank you to everyone who made a submission in support of strong sanctuary protection for WA’s south coast. Although the submission period has now ended, you can still increase your impact by sending a letter of support to your local representative.
