PerthNow: Protecting whales at home and abroad

THE Australian Government continues to fail to stand up to the whalers illegally operating in our Antarctic waters, but this year they do have an opportunity to make a big contribution to the protection of whales here in Western Australia.
In 2012 Australia will decide on a new network of marine protected areas for Australia’s waters, starting in Western Australia’s South West region.  It is a unique opportunity to protect many species in our waters, not least the whales, with one third of the world’s whale and dolphin species living in or using the region.
