“I have a strong view on protecting our marine environment,” he said.
The government said last year it would not enforce fishing bans in marine sanctuary zones across the state, and would consider permanently lifting the prohibition.
The move has created consternation among conservationists and local businesses, who are concerned about impacts on the environment and tourism.
Asked about fishing being allowed in marine sanctuary zones, Mr Baird indicated he wanted more protection for marine life.
