South Coast Register: Huskisson protests against zone changes
THE Huskisson community joined 12 other seaside communities on Saturday in protesting against the state government’s plan to allow fishing in Jervis Bay Marine Park’s sanctuary zones.
The Banners on the Beach event followed concerns raised by dive shop owners and tour operators, as well as marine scientists, about the economic and environmental impacts of the state government’s controversial plan.
Local Jervis Bay tourism operator, Sue Newson, who organised the banner raising in Huskisson, said the community has received many social and economic benefits as a result of the sanctuary areas, but she is now concerned about the ramifications of winding back protection measures.
