The Australian: Hawke backs Burke on marine reserves

BOB Hawke has backed ambitious plans for a massive network of new marine parks around Australia and strongly urged federal cabinet to back Environment Minister Tony Burke on the issue.

The former prime minister – responsible for halting Tasmania’s Franklin Dam, protecting Antarctica from mineral exploitation, and winning world heritage protection for vast rainforests – yesterday urged cabinet to endorse the marine parks.
